Terror in the Cockpit: Full Details of the FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 Incident

106

On the morning of September 30, 2026, a major aviation catastrophe was narrowly averted aboard FlyDubai flight FZ1073 (Boeing 737) en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The co-pilot launched a violent knife attack inside the cockpit in an apparent attempt to hijack and deliberately crash the aircraft. Despite a terrifying rapid descent, the heroism of the passengers and off-duty crew prevented a tragedy.

Timeline and Onboard Chaos

The incident unfolded approximately 2.5 hours after departure from Dubai International Airport (DXB), while the aircraft was cruising at 34,000 feet over Saudi Arabia. According to flight tracking data, at 08:31 AM local time, the aircraft suddenly squawked emergency code 7700 (general distress), followed minutes later by code 7500, signaling a hijacking/unlawful interference.

Immediately after, the liner entered a steep, uncontrolled dive, plummeting roughly 17,000 feet (over 5 kilometers) in less than two minutes. The extreme structural stress caused by the dive damaged the rudder in the tail section. Passengers later recounted a "living nightmare," stating that everyone on board felt they were staring death in the face.

Inside the Cockpit Battle

According to Doron Spielman from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, the assailant was the co-pilot (an Omani national). Armed with a knife, he attacked the Captain (a UAE national), inflicting severe injuries, and began bashing the control panel in an attempt to disable the autopilot and crash the plane.

Covered in blood, the Captain used his remaining strength to hit the cockpit door release switch. Hearing the commotion, a group of 3 to 5 Israeli passengers charged forward, breached the cockpit, and managed to subdue the attacker. Fortuitously, off-duty FlyDubai pilots traveling as passengers stepped in, stabilized the aircraft, and executed a safe emergency landing at Saudi Arabia's Tabuk Airport (TUU).

Investigation and Evacuation

Israeli intelligence services (Mossad and Shin Bet), alongside UAE and Saudi authorities, have launched an intensive investigation. The primary line of inquiry is an attempted terror attack, given that 166 of the 174 passengers were Israeli citizens. The attacking co-pilot is currently detained by Saudi authorities, and both pilots remain hospitalized.

On the evening of September 30, a replacement FlyDubai aircraft successfully evacuated the passengers from Tabuk, landing safely at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport.
