Azerbaijan, World Petroleum Council discuss cooperation
Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met with Pedro Miras, President of the World Petroleum Council (WPC Energy).
The meeting addressed key issues on the global energy agenda, regional energy projects, and matters related to the development of Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the organization.
Minister Parviz Shahbazov noted that while Azerbaijan is a traditional oil and gas producer and exporter, it has also made notable progress in the energy transition. In recent years, large-scale reforms have been carried out in the energy sector, numerous regulatory and legal acts have been adopted, and the development of renewable energy sources has commenced. He noted that Azerbaijan aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its installed capacity to 30 percent by 2030, with plans to raise this figure to 33.7 percent by 2027. These targets demonstrate the country’s steady progress in the energy transition and its intention to continue along this path.
The meeting also focused on energy projects of regional and international significance. Energy links spanning Central Asia, Türkiye, and Europe were considered within a unified concept. It was emphasized that these projects help interconnect energy systems, strengthen regional energy security, and contribute to the development of energy and digital infrastructure, including data centers.
WPC Energy President Pedro Miras highlighted Azerbaijan’s role as a key energy corridor between Asia and Europe, describing the country as an exemplary model that promotes dialogue between differing energy perspectives.
The officials also exchanged views on participation in the WPC Energy Congress, scheduled to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2026, as well as on future cooperation prospects with the organization.
